“I was always inspired by children’s toys, puzzles and games such as bricks, connect the Dots, mazes, etc. This also defines me as an artist; most of my work contains a playful element. I first had the idea for this work a couple of years ago. I thought ‘why not break the Abu Dhabi Classical Wing into Connect the Dots and name it Connect the Wing’? But instead of having a pre-determined sequence of numbers for the work, I chose to give it a more mischievous twist, by creating a combination of complex numbers that add mystery and movement to the work”.
‘Connect the Wing’ is inspired by the classic ‘Connect the Dots’ puzzle. Connect the Dots is a puzzle that contains a sequence of dots with numbers or letters on them, to help the player create an outline of an object. Or in other words, it is a puzzle that tests the ability of the player to find the connections between numbers, to see the bigger picture. For ‘Connect the Wing’ Abu Dhabi Art’s Classical Wing Logo was broken down into a sequence of dots but this time with non-sequence numbers, to create a challenging piece. The deliberate non-sequence provokes questions; although the Wing is still quite obvious in outline. The non-sequence contains a combination of complex numbers such as (Decimals, Negative numbers, division, multiplication and Fractions) which also gives the work texture and movement. Instead of having the colored, themed, traditionalu inspired wing that we usually see, this work is simple yet it gives the Wing a more contemporary playful edge.
