Magdi Mostafa is a Cairo-based artist who works primarily with site-specific, research-driven sound projects, multimedia installations, and experimental music. His work is rooted in dreams, scientific theory and failed utopian ambitions. Until 2010 his work dealt in large part with the visual and aural culture of the Cairo neighbourhood that he belongs to. Since 2011 his practice has focused more on the conceptual, spiritual and physical notions of experimental 3D sound. He has exhibited widely including in solo exhibitions at Townhouse Gallery, Cairo (2014) and Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art Project Space, Doha, (2014) as well as in group exhibitions at ZKM (2014), the 13th Lyon Biennial (2015), Moscow Biennial (2015), Hayward Gallery, London (2015) and Sharjah Biennale 11 where he was the recipient of the Biennale Prize in 2013. His composed soundtracks have been hosted on different online radios, and solo-programmed on 100 radio station. He has performed live at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York (2010), 100LIVE Electronic Music Festival (2008, 2009) and Mokhtar Museum, Cairo (2007).
