About The Work

Yu Youhan is regarded as one of the most important and influential artists in China and a representative figure of Chinese avant-garde art. From 1984 onwards, Yu Youhan began making his influential “Circle”series. This famous series is inspired by modernist abstract art. Like Mondrian’s rectangles, Yu Youhan’s “Circle” also explores certain essences about the world. The difference is that Yu’s “Circles” are from Laozi’s “move - ment” and spirituality. Yu Youhan’s “Circles” is not constrained by composition, edges, colors, density, shading, thickness, or moisture. Dots become lines, lines become patches, patches become fields. Yu Youhan attempts to express the relational transformations between nature, humanity, and the intergalactic cosmos with these “brushstrokes”. This work 2018.11 is a rare “Double Circle” series. Two circles from left one to right one look like a cell dividing ,and two different techniques will remind you the philosophical topic“From nothingness, being is created”.

About Yu Youhan

One of the most important and influential artists in China, Yu Youhan’s artistic practice dates back to the 1970s, while the 1980s is widely considered the beginning of Chinese contemporary art. As a leading pioneer of Chinese abstract painting and political pop movement, Yu's oeuvre combines multiple perspectives, investigating the structure of cultural identity in China through various pictorial techniques. His paintings—ubiquitous yet intriguing—has had a major impact on the art scene, and inspired a younger generation of artists. Yu Youhan represented China at the 22nd São Paulo Biennale, Brazil (1994), the 45th Venice Biennale, Italy (1993) and the 1st Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane, Australia (1991).
