About The Work
When Husain moved to the UAE he adopted many of the ways and customs of the country and often combined them with his standard practice, in life as in art. Untitled (Horse with Arabic alphabet Haa) is a wonderful example of this. The horse is the same, strong, horse that Husain is so well known for, but now with the Haa in front of it. The combination, though, is almost seamless and easy to miss, so well intertwined are the horse and the alphabet.
Maqbool Fida Husain, commonly known as M. F.Husain, was arguably the most recognizable figure of modern and contemporary Indian art, inspiring a whole generation of artists in the country. Born in1915, he was a founding member of the influential Progressive Artists Group in the 1950s. He had animmensely successful career spanning eight decades. Other than painting, he also received recognition as a print maker, photographer and film-maker. His work is in the collection of the most prestigious museums in India and abroad. His work is also in many prestigious private collections, allover the world. He passed away in 2011 in London,UK. His vast artistic legacy continues to live and grow.Widely regarded as the,“Picasso of India,”Husain moved to Mumbai at an early age and began his artistic career by painting billboards for cinemas. Husain became associated with Indian modernismin the 1940s. A dashing, highly eccentric figure dressed in impeccably tailored suits, but who oftenwent barefoot, he brandished an extra-long paint brush as a slim cane. In a career full of many remarkable milestones, in 1971 he showed alongside the same Picasso, who he was often compared to, at the Sao Paulo Biennial. Husain had an especially strong connection to the UAE. After being a frequent visitor for decades, he lived there in the autumn of his life, inself-imposedexile, for several years. From his base in the UAE he continued to paint, write scripts and even make films. Films were never toofar from Husain. From the earliest days as a cinema billboard painting, to the multiple full-length feature films he directed and produced, films were an integral part of his life.
